Cemetery Exercise [Field Work]: (Handout E)
Each Geographic Achievement Team will complete a field work exercise
using Cedar Hill Cemetery in Abilene. Teams will prepare a map of
the grave sites selected, a rubbing and a three page double spaced report
accompanied with three Excel generated graphs.

This page is to assist you with completing the Cemetery Project as to the
site selection, preparing a sketch map, statistical analysis for generating
EXCEL graphs, a stone rubbing and preparation of a one and one half, double
spaced (12 pitch) report describing the "Historical and Cultural Perspective
of the _______________ Cemetery" based on your small, sample area within
the cemetery.
This is a Field Work Exercise to be done either outside the
class period or during the class period that we will not meet. Our
CLASS
WILL NOT MEET ON ______________.
Each Geographic Assessment Team (GAT) will schedule their own time
to conduct the Field Work and materials for submission. Each
team will divide the labor and each member will contribute to the completion
of the written report.
Very important! If anyone feels they cannot participate
due to any emotional reasons, please advise the professor at the earliest
opportunity to make arrangements for some other level of participation
that may possible.
MATERIALS REQUIRED
1. Paper for a Sketch Map (May be generated with a GIS program)
2. Paper for a Rubbing (Furnished) You are provided two sheets
of newsprint paper (24x36), one sheet is to experiment and the second is
for the your final rubbing that you will submit for a grade.
3. PC Formated 3 1/2 floppy disk with EXCEL spread sheet for
data (Furnished)
4. Cemetery Data Sheet to record field and statistical information
(Furnished) There is a column to record individual names, sex, date
of birth, date of death, age, and type of marker.
5. Use a soft lead pencil or crayon to obtain your best rubbing.
ITEMS TO HAND IN
1. Sketch map of the plots selected (6 tomestones x 6 tomestones)
area (150 points)
2. Cemetery Data Sheet (100 points)
3. Rubbing (150 points)
4. Three EXCEL generated Graphs (200 points)
a. Female Deaths Against Age at Death
b. Number of Deaths by Months of the Year
c. Number of Deaths per Year
5. Written analysis for the historical and cultural aspects of
the _______________ Cemetery, ________ City, ___St. based on the data collected
and observations. (400 Points)
GRADING CRITERIA
Here are some ideas to keep in mind as you plan, conduct, and complete
this project.
a. Are your sketch map and graphs complete
and neatly labelled?
b. Have you been thorough and systemic in
your field work?
c. Does your write up reflect information
from the graphs you prepared and the Tomestones?
d. In your writing, did you apply concepts
and ideas related to the real world?
